Ireland's Historic Science Centre

Gulbenkian Foundation Best Smaller Museum 2000
Ireland’s contribution to the world of science is celebrated in nine galleries located in the restored coach house of Birr Castle Demesne.  In this unique environment mechanical, computer based interactives, demonstration models and sculptures are imaginatively used to present the history of photography, engineering and particularly astronomy in a contemporary and accessible way.

In the planning stages Scroope Design consulted with international tour operators,  on visitor profiles and local commercial development groups. For editorial content Scroope Design worked in consultation with Dr Patrick Moore, Astronomer, NASA, ESA ,  the Physics department of Trinity College and  the engineering department of Limerick University.

The winning museum was described simply as stunning by the Gulbenkian Judges who confessed to being normally bored by its subject matter, but to now being a convert. The museum has been highly successful since it opened  and based in the midlands of Ireland, attracted over 53,000 visitors already this year. The excellent displays were fitted out at a relatively modest cost but exhibiting great intelligence, humour and resourcefulness"
