2016 marked the 100th anniversary of the 1916 Rising.
It also marked the 20th anniversary of the opening of the permanent exhibitions presenting the history of the Gaol as a penal prison and a political prison. Described by the Gulbenkian judges as 'a courageous interpretation of Irish Nationalism, a refusal to deal with the subject in a revisionist manner, the museum will stimulate debate on the modern relationship betwen unionism and nationalism'.

This presentation on the political history of Ireland continues to engage with hundreds of thousands of visitors from all over the world:
Opened in 1996 to mark the 80th anniversary of the Easter Rising 1916, today it is firmly established as a “must see” destination for anyone interested in Irish political history.
